It's Social Science !

I have Humanities and Social Sciences in my class 12. How do I decide which one to opt for in Higher Education? This is one classic question that comes up during my interaction with high school students.

This is where I resort to the classic triangle of State, Markets and Society.


THE STATE

Are you someone interested in learning more about the nature of State, how Governments and Public Institutions Operate – The idea of Political thought etc ! – Then Political Science is for you. Of course if you are someone seeking a professional degree and keen to work directly in the Judiciary, you do Law. Others also have domains such as Public Policy to pursue in higher Education.


THE MARKETS

No questions asked. Go for Economics ! – Classical Social Science Discipline – Learn from Adam Smith to Amartya Sen to Claudia Goldin.

If you are someone keen to plunge into Business Studies, there is a range of Business administration / management programmes at the Undergrad level. For those who are keen to learn about recording of financial transactions and accountancy in organisations jump into the world of Commerce.

 

THE SOCIETY

Are you someone keen to know more about human society and an in-depth understanding of our social conditions. Then look no further, these are the subjects and disciplines for you :

Sociology, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography (Human Geography) etc.

There are Higher Education Universities providing a multi-disciplinary immersion in the study of society, its structures and lived realities – Social Science.

So where is History, Philosophy, Language and Literature ! in the above triangle –That’s Humanities -  To explore and appreciate what it means to be humane ! That’s for another day. Everyone should study the Humanities !

Aims of Higher Education

In my previous post , I had written briefly about what it means to study in a multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, cross-disciplinary learning environment.  And that discussion led us to another debate – What are the true aims of Higher Education from the context of India? ________ Let us look at this aspect from the viewpoint of the trinity of Society, Market and the State.   From a Societal viewpoint : – The aim of higher education is to make me (the learner) employable at the workplace of the twenty first century!
